Common Emergency Plumbing Problems and How to Quickly Fix Them?

Neptune Plumbing

If you have water leaking out of your faucet, you can't wait two to five business days for a plumber to show up to fix it. You need that water to stop right now! Fortunately, there are many emergency plumbing issues you can fix yourself. We've put together this list of common plumbing emergencies, how to fix them, and when to call help for your emergency plumbing in Calgary. Make sure you keep reading below!

1.    DRIPPING FAUCET

The sound of a dripping faucet isn't just annoying, it can also be a big money waster. The good news is that you should be able to fix the problem on your own in a few short minutes. A washer is meant to be a seal between the pipe and the faucet. If the washer wasn't installed correctly or just has normal wear and tear, the seal will be broken. The first step is to ensure the water supply is turned off. Then take the faucet apart and remove the old washer. Add the new one and put the faucet back together. Turn the water on and you're good to go.

2.    LEAKING TOILET

Does your toilet sound like it's running all the time? You might not notice any water on the floor, but that probably means you have a leak somewhere. This type of toilet repair is easy to fix. Take a look at the rubber flapper in the back of the toilet. If it's old or misshapen, it might not seal the tank completely. Buy a new one and swap it out with the old one. This should be all it takes to solve the issue. If it doesn't, there might be a more serious problem happening; call a professional before you have to deal with any flooded bathrooms!

4.    CLOGGED DRAIN

This type of plumbing emergency is a bit more troublesome than the other two on this list. It takes more work to fix a clogged drain, and if you don't have the right tools, you might not be able to do it on your own. First things first, though: don't use a chemical drain cleaner! These might temporarily fix the problem, but they likely won't get rid of the root of the problem. In some cases, they can even damage your pipes. Instead, use a snake tool to remove the blockage from your drain. If you can't reach the clog on your own, you'll need to call professional help.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE EMERGENCY ON YOUR OWN

Some emergency plumbing issues are too serious for you to fix on your own, or you might not have the experience to tools required to do it yourself. In this case, you should contact an emergency plumber. No matter what time of day (or night) it is, they will be able to arrive and take care of the problem. If you're experiencing a major leak or burst pipe, start by turning off your water to avoid water damage and a high water bill.
